Born in 2005, Sunshine is a 20-year-old Holsteiner mare and one of our OG girls here at ColdSpring. Since joining us, she has lovingly raised eight orphan foals, each one benefiting from her strong maternal instincts and her signature “been there, done that” confidence.

You can spot Sunshine from a mile away—her fiery red coat, big white blaze, flaxen-blonde mane and tail, and adorable speckled polka dots make her one of the most recognizable mares on the farm. And her personality shines just as brightly.

Before becoming a nursemare, Sunshine had an impressive performance career. Trained and ridden by Olympian Buck Davidson—a friend and neighbor here in Ocala—she competed successfully up to the 3★ level in three-day eventing. That foundation of athleticism, intelligence, and heart is still evident in everything she does.

Clients adore Sunshine. She is one of the most requested mares in our entire program thanks to her calm demeanor, rock-solid experience, and deeply nurturing nature with every foal she meets.

Sunshine wears front shoes to help keep her comfortable as she manages mild navicular changes, a common condition in older performance horses. Navicular involves inflammation or degeneration of the structures inside the hoof, which can cause soreness—but with supportive care and proper farrier work, horses like Sunshine stay comfortable and active.
